Holy Spirit and the Mysteries of Heaven

The manifestation of God in the earth is discovered through the power of the Spirit. All things are born out of the Spirit. In fact, Holy Spirit is God. What we so often think of in terms of an etherial presence is in fact God Himself. Power, authority, and the Kingdom of Heaven all find their origin in the Spirit. The Spirit itself is responsible for all of the expressions of God in the earth including the genesis of all creation, the conception of Jesus, and the breaking in of the Kingdom of Heaven into the earth through the resurrection of Jesus. In the beginning, the Spirit hovered over the face of the waters(1), the Spirit came upon Mary and she conceived(2), and the disciples were all baptized with Spirit-wind and Spirit-fire on the day of pentecost(3). It’s no wonder with such a critical role to play in the advancement of the Kingdom and the perpetuation of God’s eternal purposes(4), that the knowledge of and participation with the Holy Spirit would come under extreme attack in our day. But the truth is that God’s purposes, that were planned before the foundations of creation, cannot be understood, realized, or partnered with apart from the illumination, revelation, and mystery revealing wisdom of Holy Spirit.

In the first three chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul uses the word “wisdom” 16 times. This mystery revealing wisdom is a common theme with Paul and the apostles. In fact, in Ephesians 3:9 Paul writes,

“My passion is to enlighten every person to this divine mystery. It was hidden for ages past until now, and kept a secret in the heart of God, the Creator of all.”

Again in 1 Corinthians 2:6 Paul declares,

“However, there is a wisdom that we continually speak of when we are among the spiritually mature. It’s wisdom that didn’t originate in this present age, nor did it come from the rulers of this age who are in the process of being dethroned.”

What is this wisdom that Paul is speaking about? How is this mystery being revealed? Verse 10 reveals the answer,

“But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.“

Paul goes on to say in verse 13

“And we articulate these realities with the words imparted to us by the Spirit and not with the words taught by human wisdom. We join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words.“

Wow, I just love the way the Passion Translation puts it here, we join together Spirit-revealed truths with Spirit-revealed words. There is a funny saying in America that goes something like this, “We believe in the Father, The Son, and The Holy Bible.” Although that is probably a slight exaggeration of what some actually believe, the point comes across loud and clear. The fact is this: human wisdom rejects the power, heavenly wisdom, mystery, and revelation of the Holy Spirit. Heavenly wisdom is offensive to the natural man. Some entire Christian denominations have even gone so far as to reject the Holy Spirit’s work completely placing the entire emphasis of the kingdom on the written Word of God. The problem is that not even the Bible can be interpreted apart from Holy Spirit(5). God actually went to great lengths to make sure that those who reject the wisdom of the Holy Spirit would remain ensnared by their pride. In 1 Corinthians 1:21 Paul writes,

“For in his wisdom, God designed that all the world’s wisdom would be insufficient to lead people to the discovery of himself. He took great delight in baffling the wisdom of the world by using the simplicity of preaching the story of the cross in order to save those who believe it.”

God unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Jesus is revealed by the Spirit. The Word of God itself declares that the realities contained in God are now available to us in Christ.

“Those who live in the Spirit are able to carefully evaluate all things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God. For who has ever intimately known the mind of the Lord Yahweh well enough to become his counselor? Christ has, and we possess Christ’s perceptions.” 1 Corinthians 2: 15-16

Holy Spirit reveals the thoughts and purposes of Heaven through Jesus Christ. These mysteries revealed by the Spirit are considered foolish to men, but as wisdom to God. These mysteries contained in God and revealed to us by the Spirit are all about Jesus. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus and the manifestation of that revelation is seen in power. Those who value human wisdom will never see it. But those who welcome truth will be transformed by it and become carriers of it. The mysteries contained in Christ can never be humanly understood without the Holy Spirit. But when we as believers embrace the Spirit of God, we now possess Christ’s mind and can respond by carrying His purposes into the earth. Verse 11 declares:

“After all, who can really see into a person’s heart and know his hidden impulses except for that person’s spirit? So it is with God. His thoughts and secrets are only fully understood by his Spirit, the Spirit of God.”

The Spirit understands the heart of God and knows it’s depths. We have this Spirit, and therefore, have direct access through that same Spirit to the understanding, wisdom, and mysteries contained in His heart. How amazing!

So what exactly is the Holy Spirit revealed mystery that Paul preaches with such power? Ephesians 3:5-6 reads,

“There has never been a generation that has been given the detailed understanding of this glorious and divine mystery until now. He kept it a secret until this generation. God is revealing it only now to his sacred apostles and prophets by the Holy Spirit. Here’s the secret: The gospel of grace has made you, non-Jewish believers, into coheirs of his promise through your union with him. And you have now become members of his body—one with the Anointed One!”

Ephesians 3:9-12 says,

“My passion is to enlighten every person to this divine mystery. It was hidden for ages past until now, and kept a secret in the heart of God, the Creator of all. The purpose of this was to unveil before every throne and rank of angelic orders in the heavenly realm God’s full and diverse wisdom revealed through the church. This perfectly wise plan was destined from eternal ages and fulfilled completely in our Lord Jesus Christ, so that now we have boldness through him, and free access as kings before the Father because of our complete confidence in Christ’s faithfulness.”

In 1 Corinthians 2:7 Paul writes,

“Instead, we continually speak of this wonderful wisdom that comes from God, hidden before now in a mystery. It is his secret plan, destined before the ages, to bring us into glory. ”

God’s plan from the beginning was that all the fullness of everything He is and has done would dwell in Christ(6). That we would be made co-heirs, co-rulers, and co-sharers in His life and His glory(7). That the wisdom and mysteries of God would be put on display to the angelic realm through the Church, the Body of Christ. That the reality of the Kingdom of God would function on the earth just as it does in Heaven, all things flourishing, thriving, and reflecting the glory and image of God the Creator of all.

The Spirit of God is at the genesis of all things in the earth and gives birth to everything that our Father is doing. Our role as leaders in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth cannot be fulfilled without the Spirit because we cannot grasp the divine mysteries of Heaven without it. Through these mysteries Christ is revealed. In that revelation the transforming, redeeming, glorious power of God comes to bear on the earth. In this way we unseat the once ruling authorities and deceiving powers of darkness, displace darkness with light, lies with truth, and bring chaos into heavenly order. We are revealing Christ and His Kingdom and releasing the shining of His glory to the cosmos, discipling nations and unveiling God’s wisdom to the heavenly realm until the Body of Christ is unified and Heaven and earth become one under the magnificent banner of Jesus is King.

Final Thoughts

Many live with the birth pains and contractions of the kingdom their whole life expecting the delivery of something wonderful. But for some, the birthing will never come because it was a false pregnancy; there was never an intimacy that created life. We abort the life that could have been because true intimacy was never achieved. These people make the sounds of birth pains but a baby is never born. They never give birth to the God thing that was to be produced from their union with Jesus. Whats more, we abort the thing that God was creating to awaken and activate the next generation of world changers. This is why we must with great sobriety begin to awaken ourselves to the reality of what we are truly building. Are we advancing a kingdom under the King’s direction with His building plans, or are we propping up our own insecurities and pride by gathering people to ourselves in the name of Jesus?
